Sicily in a Weekend

Ohhhh, Sicily… You have stolen my heart. When we decided to go to Palermo, we heard mixed reviews. There were a few people, like me, who went & fell in love, & others who just completely left it out of their trips because it was known to be “dirty”. When we were in Greece, we were even told by someone to watch out for all of the dirty streets. Then we got there & wondered what the heck they were talking about! Seeing Sicily in a weekend was one of the best decisions we made! The streets were just like any other European city & the food… oh the food… Let’s just say, Palermo should DEFINITELY be on your bucket list.

Where to stay

I’m not gonna lie – because of what we had heard we didn’t do much research beforehand. We knew Palermo was the main city & we decided to stay there. We didn’t research any parts of Sicily outside of Palermo, so for that I am sorry because I am not a good source of information on Sicily as a whole. HOWEVER, Palermo is an absolute gem. Between the architecture, the street food vendors, the kids playing soccer in the alleys… it was a place that felt like home, not just a place to vacation. So I highly recommend staying in the heart of the city. We chose to stay at an Airbnb!

Where to eat

STREET. FOOD. EAT ALL OF THE STREET FOOD.

There are sooo many delicious food carts so don’t pass them up. This is where you will have the truly authentic Italian food. We ate at a few restaurants, & while all were delicious, the street food is what we remember. We actually spent a whole day just wandering & eating! One of the best parts of seeing Sicily in a weekend.

What to do

Again, wander & eat. Other than that, there are some really beautiful spots to check out. & some weird ones. Some things you definitely want to hit up are: the Palermo Cathedral, Capella Palatina, La Martorana, Quattro Canti, & the weird one – Capuchin Abbey & Catacombs. They range from beautiful to… disturbing, but they are definitely all entertaining & places you will enjoy!

Random tips

  • If going to the Catacombs, just be prepared for the large amount of dead bodies out in the open. It was a bit shocking & creepy, but also very interesting.
  • Don’t be like us – do your research beforehand so you can venture out of Palermo!

Self esteem is really important, and I’ve been learning how to build it up for some time. I love Dove Products as they can really help to feel better after using them. 😉
